PRINCIPAL POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

The principal is appointed by the Pastor in consultation with the School Board and the Catholic School Office. In the absence of the pastor, the principal is the presiding officer of the school. The principal is directly responsible to the pastor and is delegated by the pastor to be responsible for the daily administration of the school.

The principal is the educational, instructional, spiritual, and managerial leader of the school and as such has the ultimate responsibility for the practical functioning of the school, to direct and guide the educational process, and to identify and respond to the immediate and long-term needs and goals of the school.

  • A person who recognizes the need to connect the students to the parish. The hope is to create a locus for students after graduation, so to find in the parish a community they can call home and a community that continues to nourish them.
  • Develops a school climate reflecting Catholic identity.
  • A mission-driven and vision-oriented person, not just someone who will ensure the administrative aspect of the school. Mission creates culture. 
  • A person with a high standard of education. A person who holds students to a high level of education. Not someone who caters to the needs of students but inspires them to strive for excellence.
  • A person who loves the Catholic faith and hungers to share it in a Catholic setting.
  • A person who sees Catholic schools as a place that prepares the church of the future.
  • Practicing the Catholic faith, and committed to the Church, and living a sacramental life.
  • Hiring and assigning teachers in accord with Diocesan and state practices, who practice the Catholic faith, live the moral demands of the gospel, and contribute to the achievement of the school’s Catholic identity and apostolic goals.
  • Someone who understands that Catholic schools are factories of saints and empowered to become saints and given the tools to become great citizens of the world.
  • Administers and communicates Diocese policies to the school community.
  • Responsible for the annual school budget and supervises all expenditures.
  • Works with the Finance Committee to analyze the school budget.
  • Recruits, assesses, and interviews candidates for teaching and staff positions, and recommends them for hire to the pastor.
  • Helping teachers maximize their teaching potential.
  • Is responsible for the general orientation of the school community.
  • Works with the faculty staff to create and develop the Master Schedule.
  • Forming not only the mind, but also the soul of the students based on our Judeo-Christian Anthropology, and also the supernatural destiny of each student.
  • Ensuring the students are people whose intellectual growth is harmonized with spiritual, religious, emotional, and social growth, and sees education as a thing of the heart.
  • Someone who is imbued with a Catholic Worldview and ensures the school Curriculum exudes such a reflection.
  • Someone who understands that as a school we don’t just impart knowledge and experience but convey wisdom and the meaning of life as grounded in the gospel.
  • In concert with the school medical personnel to enforce immunizations and other health requirements set by the State of Rhode Island.
  • Preferably a master’s degree in education administration.
  • Preferably a minimum of 3–5 years of experience in educational leadership or school administration.
  • Preferably someone who has some understanding of the Spanish language.
